Attendance at events

Please be aware that although you can turn up on the day to any event, if the event is full, you may not be able to stay. This is because some tutors put a restriction on numbers for their events. Also note that, even if places are available, there is a cost increment for those who turn up on the day but have not booked: Full day: £3 extra · half-day: £2 extra. It is always advisable to contact the organiser, preferably the week prior to the event, to find out if places are available.

All British Wheel of Yoga student teachers need to produce a valid first aid certificate during Unit One of the Diploma Course and all Diploma holders are subsequently advised to renew that qualification every three years. If you do not have a valid certificate or need to renew your existing one, this day is appropriate for your needs.

Part of the day’s work will be to integrate the essential aspects of First Aid within the role of Yoga teaching so it becomes ‘real’. Focus will be on dealing with an emergency situation in a safe and effective way, and will include short lectures, CPR on manikins, placing a person in recovery position, bandaging, putting on slings and care in secondary illness. Questions and answers will be an integral part of the day.

Yin yoga is a style of yoga which encourages the student to develop longer holds in the postures and the muscles to relax deeply. It is a practice that is slower in pace and allows deep surrender. Poses are held using props to encourage a deep letting go.

What is it? Yin yoga is very effective in releasing stress, calming the mind, opening up the hips, hamstrings and lower spine. The practice relaxes the body throughout the class while gaining the benefits of deep stretching.

Why do it? A strong muscular practice is very yang (male) style so by practising a softer yin (feminine) practice we will create openings in the body that don’t happen in a yang practice.

Why is it good for women? As women, we have an opportunity each month to honour the moon cycle and take a break, where we can connect to our inner self and the feminine. There are a variety of postures and breathing practices that we can use during this time and beforehand.

Yin yoga is a slow mindful style that uses props and long holds in the poses to deepen the work. Please bring extra props to this day including cushions, a bolster if you have one, and an eye pillow. The day will be mostly practical with an introduction into the style in the morning.

tutor photo Andrea Kwiatowski is known for her passionate, dynamic and inspirational teaching that incorporates both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga from the lineage of T Krishnamacharaya. Her classes integrate deep Bhakti-infused practices with the application of precise alignment and deep intention. Andrea believes that yoga can enable us to become self-aware and fill our lives with compassion and love.

She trained as a professional dancer and worked extensively around the world where her interest in yoga and eastern philosophy began. She has studied and taught in India, Thailand, Egypt, France, Sri Lanka, Spain and Turkey.

Andrea is a DCT for the BWY, a certified Jivamukti yoga teacher, Yin yoga teacher and Restorative teacher. She teaches in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, where she lives, at the Jasmine Trust BWY-approved centre, and also at the Jivamukti centre in London. She leads BWY events, retreats and workshops around the country and taught at the annual Congress this year. She has set up Santoshayoga, a Yoga centre which gives a percentage of all profits to animal welfare and local charities.

The day will be an opportunity to examine, practise and discuss several forms of meditation both from the Yoga tradition and others. We will also explore the connection between meditation and self-development, gaining a clearer idea of where and how the self or ego can help or maybe hinder practice.

Yoga has been a lifelong practice for Miki; perhaps not surprising as her mother was also a yoga teacher. She has been teaching for 20 years, and been a Diploma and Foundation Course Tutor, served on the BWY Education Committee from 2002 - 2005, and taught extensively on In Service Training days. Miki has a special interest in the philosophy of Yoga and Meditation, which is central to her practice.

During this day we will explore the Primary Series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga is an energetic style of yoga - a series of postures that flow together to help energise the body, eliminate toxins and provide strength, stamina and flexibility. The creation of heat through muscle work and breath control increases suppleness and decreases the risk of injury. During the day we will look at Ujjayi breathing, bandhas (internal locks) & drishtis (focus points).

tutor photo Sarah Astbury has been running Introduction to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Workshops for 5 years, allowing students to experience this dynamic style of yoga in a way that makes it accessible for all, regardless of age and ability. Sarah regularly works overseas and runs residential yoga and activity holidays at the Aztec Yoga Centre in Bulgaria. She also spends time teaching at Chiva Som Health Spa in Thailand, which is regularly voted the world’s top Health Spa Hotel.

John teaches that in order to realise the psychological benefits of hatha yoga the body needs to be taken safely but fully to the edge of its ability which is individual to each student. The session will include dynamic and static asana, meditation and philosophy.

Inspired to move from martial arts to yoga by the work of Godfrey Devereux, John has also had training in the AYS tradition with Sheila Baker and Ranju Roy. Continuous study of vajrayana Buddhism under the instruction and influence of Prince Ratu Pandji Sakti of Bali and the Rinpoches Sogyal, Traleg and Mingyur allow John to bring a unique philosophical aspect to his yoga.

This course, which can count towards the Wheel’s in-service training requirements, is for all BWY members and other approved teachers of yoga who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of the yoga tradition. It will explore the emergence and development of yogic ideas and practices in ancient and medieval India.

Key themes will be:
(1) the interplay between orthodox brahmanical traditions (as found in texts such as the Upanisads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutra) and heterodox ones such as Buddhism and Jainism in terms of who borrowed what from whom;
(2) the differences in the world-views of the major yogic traditions and how we can make sense of them;
(3) the identification of common patterns that run through the various forms of yoga, and
(4) the importance of studying original sources rather than people’s interpretations of them. A brief introduction to philosophical and historical methods will also be provided.

All sessions will mix presentations from the course leader with question, answer and discussion slots. Small group work on key texts and practical activities are also a feature of this course. Students will be required to undertake preparatory reading for each session and there will be one formal assessment, an essay of 1000 words.
That said, this course is for you, the participant. So bring along all those questions, queries wonderings and hunches that you have about the history and philosophy of yoga and share them with us.

tutor photo Peter Connolly studied for BA, MA and PhD degrees in Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Lancaster and a BSc in Psychology with the Open University. He has taught Indian religion and philosophy on BA and MA courses for over 20 years and has worked with various yoga organisations throughout that time. He is interested in how people go about constructing histories of yoga and the methods they use for making sense of yoga texts. He is also fascinated by all forms of altered states of consciousness and has trained in both Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis, both of which offer an interesting perspective on the psychology of yoga. His classes are well known for their clarity of exposition and informal style. Some students have suggested that he be cloned so that he can teach more courses.

Christopher's teaching is based on his book The Yoga of Wealth. This explores the relationship between Yoga, Ego, and Wealth. Real dharmic wealth begins with generousity, not grasping. He presents an evolutionary vision of wealth that is sustainable and spiritually intelligent, through his teaching and experiential practice on this day.

tutor photo Christopher Gladwell is a contemporary Western Yogi. He has been involved in many aspects of Yogic practice over the last twenty five years, and has explored the Physical, Devotional, Mental and Spiritual realms of Yoga, having practised extensively in Vinyasa Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Meditation and Deep Inquiry. He is grounded in Western Biological Sciences as well as Eastern Philosophy. Christopher is a Certified Trainer in NLP and an Advanced Practitioner of Hypnosis. As a Lover of Life, he offers his work as an East-West devotional synergy, and to the benefit and freedom of all beings everywhere. Christopher has travelled and taught Yoga internationally and has had many articles published in the international Yoga press.

The day will be based around four sections.
1. Recognising how the inhale and exhale affect movement in asana.
2. Considering more challenging asana work progressively
3. Working with a progressive approach towards directional and controlled pranayama.
4. Linking breath and movement.

Initially we will be considering how movements on the inhale and the exhale can restrict or encourage movement and freedom in asana. We will practice individual movements within asana to recognise how the inhale or exhale can affect the movement.

We will also look at different approaches to the same posture and consider how they may suit differing body types.

We will be working with progressive Sukha, Sukha Purvakh and Savitri ratios through several phases, that will give a level at which everyone can work confidently, directing our breathing to particular areas of our lungs. Mudra will assist this process with the use of some partner work and at some stage a progressive exercise that will incorporate the principles learned into a sequence that can be taken away and worked with in our own personal practice.

We shall be considering the role of visualisation and sound allied to pranayama practices and its effects on both mind and body.

The workshop will be an introduction to gentle asana, meditation, and relaxation. The practices are designed not only for people suffering from cancer, but also for their carers. Jashu will give ideas about how to cope with cancer both emotionally and physically. The workshop will also be enjoyed by people who are feeling fragile and delicate, and anyone who would like to know more about healing yoga.

The gentle practice will be based on 'Liberation' movements; which are from seated to lying down. Jashu says the practice is very different as it involves slow movement and is very effective for body, mind and soul.

Jashu Patel has been practising yoga for over 20 years. She holds the BWY diploma in Yoga as well as having completed the 'Yoga for People living with Cancer' module with Julie Friedeberger. She has also been taught and inspired by Dave Charlton and Gail Reeves. She has taught at the BWY Summer School and at meditation workshops in Leicester. She teaches regular weekly classes in various venues in Leicester and is currently planning work with LOROS (the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice).

This workshop, examining side bending and Trikonasana, will include an in-depth study of the kinesiology of these movements (joints and muscles involved). Alignment will be explored, particularly pelvic position, using pair/group work to highlight each individual's range of flexibility. We will be considering the long-term practice of these movements/asanas with the employment of modifications to develop a deeper understanding of our body.

The workshop will be suitable for teachers, student teachers and serious yoga students.

This morning session will provide a practical introduction to Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga, looking at constitutional types and characteristics (dosha), and ways to bring them into balance and harmony through simple diet and lifestyle changes. By the end of the session, everyone will have an understanding of their own unique constitution. The session will end with a short yoga/pranayama practice incorporating some of these simple principles which will be of benefit to all constitutions.

tutor photo Carole Pearson is an Ayurvedic Practitioner, specialising in diet and lifestyle, and has trained for two years with the European Institute of Vedic Studies in Somerset under the guidance of her teachers Atreya Smith and Alex Duncan. Her love of the subject has also led her to qualify in Ayurvedic Massage with the same school. She qualified as a yoga teacher in 2005 with the Shanti Yoga School and her passion for yoga and self-knowledge led her into Ayurveda. She sees yoga and ayurveda as forming a complete approach for optimal health, vitalty and higher awareness; a way towards self-empowerment which is much needed in society today.

The day is designed to look at the benefits of inverted poses, its main point is to explain that these poses need to be approached in a way that they do not cause stress on the body. This necessitates a clear and coherent approach to the preparation for inverted postures and a realistic look at contraindications.

tutor photo Peter Blackaby has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. He originally trained as an Iyengar teacher, but his subsequent studies in osteopathy and meetings with other yoga teachers led him to change his direction, pursuing a more bio-mechanically friendly approach to asana work. Recently this has developed into a broader ‘humanistic’ perspective, with the intention of making yoga more accessible to the western mind by grounding the physical, physiological and psychological effects of yoga practice in a rational context.

A pregnant woman in the class can sometimes cause alarm: what should or shouldn't I do? Is it safe for her to lie on her back? We will go through the BWY general guidelines for Yoga in pregnancy, look at the general format of a yoga class, and briefly analyse the physiological changes of pregnancy in relation to the other people who might be in the class. By seeing the presence of a pregnant woman as a boon rather than a problem, we can focus on the positive possibilities that arise from such questions. We will examine how we can integrate alternatives for pregnant women - not only without disrupting the class, but also enhancing the class - in order to develop confidence and acceptance.

(1) the interplay between orthodox brahmanical traditions (as found in texts such as the Upanisads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutra) and heterodox ones such as Buddhism and Jainism in terms of who borrowed what from whom;
(2) the differences in the world-views of the major yogic traditions and how we can make sense of them;
(3) the identification of common patterns that run through the various forms of yoga, and
(4) the importance of studying original sources rather than people’s interpretations of them.

Japanese Haiku poetry is simple in its wording and straightforward in its message. Our day of practice will be of a similar nature: when we practise yoga and release tension in the body, we free tied up energy. This can then be used to focus the mind and create 'ekagrata' - one pointedness - a key state within the yoga model. The day will include the use of asana, pranayama, mudra and bandha with contemplation and development of ekagrata as a key component in our process.

Since yoga is personal in nature, work will be modified and varied to suit individual needs.

tutor photo Carolyn Clarke has been developing her yoga practice since 1970 and is a DCT in the East Midlands. She is particularly interested in how yoga fits into everyday life and how its practice helps the practitioner to make sense of life itself.
