Howard Crosthwaite read English at Durham University and went on to train for the Anglican priesthood at St Stephen's House, Oxford in 1959. It was there that he developed an interest in Anglican plainsong chant which continued during his ministry. He was introduced to Yoga in 1984 by his teacher, Pat, who went on to become his wife. He qualified as a teacher himself gaining the British Wheel of Yoga teaching diploma in 1994. In 1992 he attended a week's training with TKV Desikachar and met Paul Harvey for the first time. He went on to do the 4-year Yoga Practitioner course with Viniyoga Britian (now the Association for Yoga Studies), qualifying in 1998.
Howard's first taste of Vedic chanting came with a weekend spent with Muz Murray on one of his annual visits to Britain. It reminded him very much of the plainsong chant which he loved and he soon became addicted. During the Practitioner course he worked first with Paul Harvey and then with Chris Preist before visiting the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai in 2000 and becoming the individual student of Radha Sundararajan, the Director of Vedavani, the KYM's Vedic Chant Directorate. Howard is also a graduate teacher with the Krishnamacharya Yoga and Healing Foundation (KHYF).
Howard teaches a monthly chant group in his home in Doncaster, runs study courses and Retreats and has a growing number of individual students. He pays annual visits to the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, South India, to study with Radha and he has written an instruction manual on Vedic Chanting, The Art of Vedic Chanting available either from him or through Amazon.

Practice and Detachment are the foundations of yoga practice, the actual practice and commitment to it and the detachment of the results of that practice. This day will be for any yoga student who would like to be reminded of these two interlinking qualities, it will also be in memory of our dear friend and yogi Frank Lunn who studied and worked with Andrea many times. The day will be a celebration of Frank's yoga commitment with stories, teachings and music that he used in his classes. It will be a day of remembrance and joy not sadness and a percentage of the cost of the day will be donated to RNLI a charity close to Frank's heart. If anyone has a yoga story they would like to share about Frank please email Andrea on info[at]santoshayoga.co.uk
Andrea Kwiatkowski trained as a professional dancer and worked extensively around the world where her interest in yoga and eastern philosophy began. She is a DCT for the BWY, and an Advanced certified Jivamukti yoga teacher. She is also certified to teach Yin yoga, having studied with Sarah Powers since 2003, and is a Restorative yoga teacher under the guidance of Judith Hanson Lasater.
Andrea has studied and taught in India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Spain, Egypt, France, Turkey, Germany and Australia as well as teaching in Cambridgeshire where she lives. She set up Santoshayoga giving a percentage of all profits to animal welfare and charities both here and abroad, including Azahar, a foundation for teaching yoga to children in the Third World. She continues to teach and be involved at the Jivamukti yoga centre in London’s Notting Hill and assists her teachers on Immersions in the UK. Andrea leads BWY events, retreats and workshops around the country and teaches at the BWY Congress and yoga festivals.
Andrea believes that yoga can enable us to become self-aware and fill our lives with compassion and love.

This day will examine the inclusion of philosophical Yoga concepts in weekly Yoga classes, and will be divided into practical and discussion time.
We shall explore the concept of the Prana Vayus in a practical Yoga Session, and examine Mudras to ascertain the appropriate student level when teaching to weekly classes. Attendees will participate in movements, asanas, and breathing techniques with the inclusion of concentration on Prana Vayus and Mudras. Time will be allowed for discussion on the relevance of these and other philosophical topics in weekly classes.
Any pre-course reading on Prana Vayus and Mudras will be helpful for reviewing these topics and for participation in discussions.

In this course we will look at what limits our potential for optimal movement, and explore techniques to help us overcome these limitations. Through the concept of body-mapping, we will discover how we organise our posture, and by developing harmonious co-operation of all our body parts we will learn to associate effortless movement with pleasurable movement. The day will include work with body and breath, meditative practices, and an afternoon session of Yoga Nidra.

Marye Wyville was trained in the Satyananda tradition by Julie Freideberger and Swami Dharmananda, and later spent four years as a resident of Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales. She has a keen interest in the transformative potential of movement and has for several years been a practitioner of the discipline of Authentic Movement, whose emphasis on the development of a compassionate inner witness informs her practice and teaching of yoga. She is currently undergoing training in Ruthy Alon's Bones for Life programme, which focuses on stimulating bone strength through natural movement and weight-bearing posture.
Marye is co-tutor with Rajesh David on their Nada Yoga courses, and in addition to joining Rajesh on some of his CDs of devotional music, has produced 2 Yoga Nidra CDs

To introduce students to the practice of Kundalini. The day will include Kundalini Kirya and Meditations as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Kriya are a set of actions that are each done for a specific time and work on the body's energy. Kundalini meditations are usually active meditations involving music and/or chanting. We will be working with kriya and meditations that will help to remove blockages in the physical body to help us recognise our divinity. We will also look at what holds us back in living as our true selves.
Dawn Wesselby (Atamjeet) is a BWY tutor and DCT. In 2005 she experienced her first Kundalini Yoga class and found the experience transformational. Since then she has undertaken the Teacher Training with the Sahej Academy, when she took her spiritual name, and is now running classes and workshops to share this amazing practice.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is now recognized worldwide as the way forward for applied psychology. Its applications are manifold. You might have come across NLP in relation to therapy or coaching, however, NLP is equally at home in advanced communication skills used by exceptional teachers and trainers.
This day is very practical. There will be an introduction to the principles and historical background of NLP, incl. Q&A. There will be plenty of Asana work using NLP practically, i.e. doing and discussing so there is a clear understanding of what is actually happening; including a ‘standard’ model for helping students achieve more than they thought possible. You may be surprised#

Peter Connolly studied for BA, MA and PhD degrees in Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Lancaster and a BSc in Psychology with the Open University. He has taught Indian religion and philosophy on BA and MA courses for over 20 years and has worked with various yoga organisations throughout that time. He is interested in how people go about constructing histories of yoga and the methods they use for making sense of yoga texts. He is also fascinated by all forms of altered states of consciousness and has trained in both Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis, both of which offer an interesting perspective on the psychology of yoga. His classes are well known for their clarity of exposition and informal style. Some students have suggested that he be cloned so that he can teach more courses.

This will be a therapeutic hatha yoga day on yoga as medicine, based on a large randomised trial run for sufferers of chronic low back pain by the University of York. Teaching of pain relief and core sequences devised by Alison Trewhela for the largest piece of yoga research to date, costing almost £250,000. The results were a clinically and statistically significant 30 benefit in improvement in back function of being offered specialist yoga compared to the usual care control group. There will be colour photographic handouts, and the opportunity to buy the book and Relaxations CD co-authored by Trewhela and Semlyen. www.yogaforbacks.co.uk has a 4-minute video and links to the research paper pdf in the Annals of Internal Medicine, one of the world's top five medical journals.

(2) To expand on the subject of low back care yoga research with the use of articles and handouts.
(3) To present practical teaching of the Pain Relief Postures used in the trial for acute pain, plus breathing and relaxation.
(4) To present details on the anatomy of the back, prevalence and causes of low back pain.
(5) To teach a practical lesson on CORE A sequence with appropriate hatha yoga practices for maintaining back health, including modifications, contraindications and placement of props, plus relaxation.

The dialogue between dynamic and static postures
• Dynamic postures favour circulation, open our perception and allow us to inhabit our body as well as the space around us.
• The use of static postures favours inner communication and creates an intense dialogue between inside and outside. Static postures purify inner space and free our vital energy.
• A well-balanced use of dynamic and static postures opens a living space for being in the body and in the world.
Peter Hersnack, who is Danish, is a yoga teacher trainer linked to The French Institute of Yoga (Institut Francais de Yoga). He studied full time with T.K.V. Desikachar during four years between 1970 and 1975. Today he lives in Montpellier in France.
Peter invites his students to question the inner meaning of practice and teaching. Together they explore states of body and breath that allows inner presence as well as living relationship with what is. He transmits an approach to yoga, which is original and coherent in a constant dialogue with tradition.
