Yoga events in BWY East Midlands Region
Attendance at events
Please be aware that although you can turn up on the day to any event, if the event is full, you may not be able to stay. This is because some tutors put a restriction on numbers for their events. Also note that, even if places are available, there is a cost increment for those who turn up on the day but have not booked: Full day: £3 extra · half-day: £2 extra. It is always advisable to contact the organiser, preferably the week prior to the event, to find out if places are available.
Venue map and driving directions
For a map of the location of each venue and driving directions to it, type your postcode into the input box below, and select the relevant venue from the drop down box. A Google map, with driving directions from your home to the venue, will open in a new window. Selecting a venue without entering your postcode will display just the location of the venue—without driving directions.

If you do not have a valid certificate or need to renew your existing one, this day is appropriate for your needs
Part of the day’s work will be to integrate the essential aspects of First Aid within the role of Yoga teaching so it becomes ‘real’. Focus will be on dealing with an emergency situation in a safe and effective way, and will include short lectures, CPR on manikins, placing a person in recovery position, bandaging, putting on slings and care in secondary illness. Questions and answers will be an integral part of the day.
A comprehensive booklet and first aid kit are provided.

You will explore leverage in asana, the relative weights of the parts of the body, the position of the limbs and the effects on muscles. You will be introduced to PNF (Propriocepter Neuromuscular Facilitation). This is a series of safe stretches totally different to the passive and ballistic stretches that are usually used in yoga. Before the final relaxation you will be introduced to some of the techniques involved in ‘Touch for Health’.
Frank Lunn is a BWY Diploma holder and teaches in health clubs and private classes in the Lincoln and Grantham area. He has studied yoga in India, and has travelled the world for many years. As an engineer, he is very interested in the mechanics of the body in yoga asanas, and how leverage can alter the load and strength of postures during a class.

This course, which can count towards the Wheel’s in-service training requirements, is for all BWY members and other approved teachers of yoga who want to develop their knowledge and understanding of the yoga tradition. It will explore the emergence and development of yogic ideas and practices in ancient and medieval India.
Key themes will be:
(1) the interplay between orthodox brahmanical traditions (as found in texts such as the Upanisads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutra) and heterodox ones such as Buddhism and Jainism in terms of who borrowed what from whom;
(2) the differences in the world-views of the major yogic traditions and how we can make sense of them;
(3) the identification of common patterns that run through the various forms of yoga, and
(4) the importance of studying original sources rather than people’s interpretations of them. A brief introduction to philosophical and historical methods will also be provided.
All sessions will mix presentations from the course leader with question, answer and discussion slots. Small group work on key texts and practical activities are also a feature of this course. Students will be required to undertake preparatory reading for each session and there will be one formal assessment, an essay of 1000 words.
That said, this course is for you, the participant. So bring along all those questions, queries wonderings and hunches that you have about the history and philosophy of yoga and share them with us.

Suited to any level of yoga practitioner, enjoy a practical hatha yoga day informed by the Ayurvedic Doshas (constitutions) of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga and concerns self-healing. The day includes personal constitution questionnaires to assess what types of yoga postures and approach to practice will most benefit the individual. Like tailoring clothes, the aim is to discover the yoga that suits us best and enhances the benefits and efficiency of practice. Expect to explore physical yoga postures suited to each type with an awareness of the interaction of the five elements - ether, air, fire, water and earth. The area of the body most at risk of disease will also be discussed for each type. Also breathing exercises, affirmation, meditation and relaxation. It will be fun as well as an enriching practice and understanding of how yoga and self-healing interact. There are handouts.
Anna Semlyen BWY Dip, MA PPE (Oxon), MSc Health Economics (York) is a BWY yoga teacher and researcher with the University of York’s Health Sciences Department. She qualified in 1999 and is joint author of the ‘Yoga For Healthy Lower Backs’ manuals for students and teachers, and the relaxation CD made for the University of York’s trial, funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign. Anna is an IST tutor on Ayurvedic Yoga and Dosha, and tutored on this topic at the BWY National Congress 2009.

This exploration of the techniques of Bandha and Kriya will focus on strengthening and using the core muscles and using Bandhas in Asanas. Much work will be prohibited for post-abdominal surgery or pregnancy, but the tutor will endeavour to incorporate everyone into the day’s activities.
The first session will focus on exercises to develop core strength, utilise Mula Bandha to strengthen Asana and work towards gaining the control needed to achieve techniques such as Kapalabhati. Following a short break, there will be a focus on using the Bandhas to aid breath control and a simple Pranayama practice.
Intended learning outcomes:
• Understand the purpose of Bandhas and Kriyas.
• Work on strengthening the core muscles.
• Explore the use of Bandhas in Asana and breath control.
Val Davies (Vivekananda Ma) is a BWY-trained teacher, DCT and Verifier, who has been teaching Yoga for almost 25 years and has particular interest in using breath work to initiate an investigation of the inner world. She favours and integral approach to Yoga. Our practice should bring suppleness to the limbs and invigorate all the body systems. It should also induce spaciousness in our thinking and attitudes and open the psyche, enabling an analysis of our character traits in order to release the conditioning that binds us to old habits.

The ancient art and science of yoga is as powerful now as it was thousands of years ago. Unlocking its secrets requires patience, perseverance and intense study. After three decades, Brian continues on his path of exploration and discovery. He teaches directly from his personal experience and studies. He lives at his retreat centre which was established as a haven of peace and tranquillity, where the timeless teachings of pure Hatha Yoga can be transmitted unfettered by the usual constraints of everyday living. He also runs teacher training courses approved by Yoga Alliance UK, which is dedicated to setting and maintaining high standards of teaching yoga in Britain and Europe.
Brian has dedicated much time to teaching the benefits of Thai Massage for teachers and students of yoga. These interests have resulted in his new book, The Art of Adjusting, written specifically for yoga teachers.

The day is very much an exploration, with the intention that the attendees will determine the direction that the sequences will go with some guidance from Dawn. Using some volunteers (preferably not the trainee teachers – am hoping to line some up from weekly class) to demonstrate the postures as the sequences unfold.
We will look at stimulating our creativity by thinking ‘outside the box’ within a group exercise.
We will then look at some philosophical quotes and how they can be linked into postures to help bring yogic concepts into the ‘ordinary’ yoga class. These postures will then be used as the basis to design another lesson plan with a theme decided by the group.
Dawn Wesselby is an experienced BWY teacher and a continuing student of yoga philosophy. She has been practising yoga for over ten years and teaching for the past seven. Dawn is a DCT in Lincolnshire and is also qualified in Body Massage, Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Reiki, Hopi Ear Candling and Crystal Therapy. Whatever area Dawn is working in, her teaching always has two qualities: what is taught is aimed at helping students cope with the challenges that life throws at them. Yoga is a fantastic toolbox of practices and skills to help us find our centre in a busy, and at times, chaotic world. Dawn believes passionately that yoga should be relevant to how we live our lives and aimed at improving our quality of life.
It is fun. Life is serious enough without making yoga another milestone around our necks. Dawn teaches with humour, lightness and a sense of joy - and sometimes mischief.

Insight and Wisdom (Jnana and Vijnana)
The day will consist of 2 yoga sessions, 10.00 - 12 noon & 2 pm - 4 pm led by Steve Brandon, and will be appropriate for yoga practitioners at any level.
From the Yoga viewpoint there are two types of knowledge, secular or worldly knowledge and sacred or spiritual knowledge. The ancient Yoga texts of antiquity, Upanishads, Yoga Sutras and Samkhya Karika, deal with 'Atma Vidya' or 'Soul Knowledge'. For worldly knowledge we can go to a University to study, if we have the correct entry qualifications.
To gain entry to the realm of spiritual knowledge we must also have the correct qualifications; a Sattvic mind and the ability to go into Samadhi. Samadhi is the tool to attain spiritual knowledge. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali describe the possibilities for a person with Samadhi. For the benefit of Yoga aspirants who do not have the Samadhi capability, Patanjali kindly gives a detailed and practical procedure by which this may be attained. The Yoga aspirant is then able to have insight into nature and spirit and knowledge of the true Self.
In these sessions there will be an overview of the path presented by Patanjali, together with the practical means of attaining the goals. Sessions will include lecture, asana, pranayama, meditation, discussion and questions but will primarily be practical with just enough theory to inform what we are doing. The focus being on personal benefits, the sessions will be suitable for everyone at whatever stage they have reached on the yoga path.
Steve Brandon began Yoga practice in 1996 at The Auckland Yoga Academy in New Zealand. In 1997 he returned to the UK. He completed his BWY Diploma in 2002. Continuing his studies with Viniyoga Britain and his personal tutor Ranju Roy, he completed the V.B. Practitioner Training in 2006. (Viniyoga Britain is now the AYS). During this time he also completed workshops with T.K.V. Desikachar and A.G. and Indra Mohan. Since then he has devoted himself to the practice and study of Krishnamacharya's Yoga.
Since 2007 Steve has been studying with Krishnamacharya’s long term student, Srivatsa Ramaswami. Steve has completed Vinyasa Krama Yoga teacher training with Srivatsa Ramaswami and has studied with him in the UK, India and the USA. He is on The Yoga Register as a Yoga Elder and is a Senior Teacher in AYS.
Steve has a decade of teaching experience and, as well as leading private classes, has taught in schools, health centres, community education and prisons. He has taught students from 7 years to 80 years of age from all walks of life. He is married and lives with his family in Somerset, integrating family life and a comprehensive Yoga practice.

This will be an informative and fun morning working with energy - releasing the blocks and exploring different methods of how to keep it flowing. To energise, creates a wonderful heat in your body which helps to build up strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration and alertness. When you release these energy blocks from your body and mind it helps the inner healing to start.
Sandy Tebutt has been teaching Yoga for over 30 years. She believes that Yoga is not just for those who are physically fit or spiritually sound.

Japanese Haiku poetry is simple in its wording and straightforward in its message. Our day of practice will be of a similar nature: when we practise yoga and release tension in the body, we free tied up energy. This can then be used to focus the mind and create 'ekagrata' - one pointedness - a key state within the yoga model. The day will include the use of asana, pranayama, mudra and bandha with contemplation and development of ekagrata as a key component in our process.
Since yoga is personal in nature, work will be modified and varied to suit individual needs.
Carolyn has been studying and teaching yoga for over 25 years, and is a DCT in Nottinghamshire. Interested in all aspects of yoga, practical and theoretical, she is always trying to develop and refine her practice and understanding of that practice. ‘As I ‘mature’, my journey is to let Yoga help me to live life with ease and strength and assist me in refining my relationship with ‘self’ and the ever-changing roles I have created for ‘my’ self.’

Ayurveda, a sister science of yoga, is a beautiful system through which we can learn to work with nature to achieve a more balanced lifestyle and to return to health when we are unwell. Unlike most forms of health care, Ayurveda is self-empowering because it requires us to develop our own self-awareness and observational skills and teaches us how to act upon that information. Also, significantly, it asks us to see the world differently, as being a dynamic expression of consciousness, meaning that Ayurveda is simultaneously simple and at the same time extremely profound.
The aim of this workshop is give you a good basis of Ayurvedic understanding and how to apply this knowledge practically to enhance your own health and happiness. There will also be time dedicated to practice and discussion when you can raise any questions you may have.
Sarah Beck has been studying Ayurveda for approximately seven years. She has been fortunate to study under the guidance of Dr David Frawley and Vaidya Atreya Smith, two of the leading western authorities on Ayurveda. More recently Sarah has completed a clinical internship with Dr Alaknanda Rao B.A.M.S. and Dr Deepa Kshire B.A.M.S. at the Panini Clinic, Pune, India.
Sarah works as a B.W.Y. Diploma Course Tutor running teacher-training courses on the Wirral and has a small Ayurvedic practice at her home.

Sound can have a profound effect on restoring right resonance and therefore, harmony, to the Chakra System, so it combines beautifully with yoga to increase further our potential for true well-being, a peaceful mind, and to finding our centre within a radiant heartspace.
The day will bring together Sound with a programme of Hatha Yoga for balancing the Chakras, Mantra, Sacred Chants from around the world and a Sound 'Bath' employing the deeply purifying, 'unblocking' and harmonizing qualities of instruments , such as a Chinese Wind Gong, Shamanic Drum and Tibetan Singing Bowls. A total fine-tuning for all levels of the being#
Blu's fascination with all that nurtures body, mind and spirit has been the main focus of most of her life. She first discovered the joy of Yoga and its wholistic effect in 1976 and has been teaching (BWY) Yoga since 1989. Her next major study was colour through the Aura-Soma Colour Care system, in which she qualified as a Practitioner and Teacher. A Sound workshop at a BWY Congress later inspired Blu to complete the training with the College of Sound Healing to become a Sound Healing Practitioner and Teacher, further complementing her work also with Seichem-Reiki, again, giving healing treatments and Initiations.

This will be a day of practice and discussion about how yoga can help people nowadays. Nearly everyone nowadays is extremely busy, often to the point of exhaustion. We shall explore the possibility of giving our students short practices, involving body, breath and mind, to make it easier for them to practise at home.
We shall also look at the ideas of karma yoga presented in the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, to see whether they could help make our lives, and those of our students, more meaningful and rewarding.

This will be a practical morning working with, and exploring - through yoga - our inner actions and the way they can affect our everyday life. A constant process of learning about yourself. Some yoga experience is necessary.

It is almost inevitable in any yoga class that there will be someone with a back problem. In this workshop, we will explore movements and postures that can help to strengthen the muscles which support the spine. They may, if practised regularly, help to overcome back pain.
