Yoga events in BWY East Midlands Region

Attendance at events

Please be aware that although you can turn up on the day to any event, if the event is full, you may not be able to stay. This is because some tutors put a restriction on numbers for their events. Also note that, even if places are available, there is a cost increment for those who turn up on the day but have not booked: Full day: £3 extra · half-day: £2 extra. It is always advisable to contact the organiser, preferably the week prior to the event, to find out if places are available.

Venue map and driving directions

For a map of the location of each venue and driving directions to it, type your postcode into the input box below, and select the relevant venue from the drop down box. A Google map, with driving directions from your home to the venue, will open in a new window. Selecting a venue without entering your postcode will display just the location of the venue—without driving directions.

What is transition? What is change? How are they linked? What outcomes can they have?
This session will explore these themes through asanas, breath work, mantra and quiet reflection.

Celia Herrick is a BWY teacher with nearly twenty years' experience. She regularly teaches nine classes a week, and one-to-one lessons. Her work is based on the ethos of Desikachar. Japanese haikuJapanese Haiku poetry is simple in its wording and straightforward in its message. Our day of practice will be of a similar nature: when we practise yoga and release tension in the body, we free tied up energy. This can then be used to focus the mind and create 'ekagrata' - one pointedness - a key state within the yoga model. The day will include the use of asana, pranayama, mudra and bandha with contemplation and development of ekagrata as a key component in our process.

Since yoga is personal in nature, work will be modified and varied to suit individual needs.

tutor photo Carolyn has been studying and teaching yoga for over 25 years, and is a DCT in Nottinghamshire. Interested in all aspects of yoga, practical and theoretical, she is always trying to develop and refine her practice and understanding of that practice. ‘As I ‘mature’, my journey is to let Yoga help me to live life with ease and strength and assist me in refining my relationship with ‘self’ and the ever-changing roles I have created for ‘my’ self.’

Ayurveda, a sister science of yoga, is a beautiful system through which we can learn to work with nature to achieve a more balanced lifestyle and to return to health when we are unwell. Unlike most forms of health care, Ayurveda is self-empowering because it requires us to develop our own self-awareness and observational skills and teaches us how to act upon that information. Also, significantly, it asks us to see the world differently, as being a dynamic expression of consciousness, meaning that Ayurveda is simultaneously simple and at the same time extremely profound.

The aim of this workshop is give you a good basis of Ayurvedic understanding and how to apply this knowledge practically to enhance your own health and happiness. There will also be time dedicated to practice and discussion when you can raise any questions you may have.

tutor photo Sarah Beck has been studying Ayurveda for approximately seven years. She has been fortunate to study under the guidance of Dr David Frawley and Vaidya Atreya Smith, two of the leading western authorities on Ayurveda. More recently Sarah has completed a clinical internship with Dr Alaknanda Rao B.A.M.S. and Dr Deepa Kshire B.A.M.S. at the Panini Clinic, Pune, India.

Sarah works as a B.W.Y. Diploma Course Tutor running teacher-training courses on the Wirral and has a small Ayurvedic practice at her home.

Sound can have a profound effect on restoring right resonance and therefore, harmony, to the Chakra System, so it combines beautifully with yoga to increase further our potential for true well-being, a peaceful mind, and to finding our centre within a radiant heartspace.

The day will bring together Sound with a programme of Hatha Yoga for balancing the Chakras, Mantra, Sacred Chants from around the world and a Sound 'Bath' employing the deeply purifying, 'unblocking' and harmonizing qualities of instruments , such as a Chinese Wind Gong, Shamanic Drum and Tibetan Singing Bowls. A total fine-tuning for all levels of the being#

Blu's fascination with all that nurtures body, mind and spirit has been the main focus of most of her life. She first discovered the joy of Yoga and its wholistic effect in 1976 and has been teaching (BWY) Yoga since 1989. Her next major study was colour through the Aura-Soma Colour Care system, in which she qualified as a Practitioner and Teacher. A Sound workshop at a BWY Congress later inspired Blu to complete the training with the College of Sound Healing to become a Sound Healing Practitioner and Teacher, further complementing her work also with Seichem-Reiki, again, giving healing treatments and Initiations.

All British Wheel of Yoga student teachers need to produce a valid first aid certificate during Unit One of the Diploma Course and all Diploma holders are subsequently advised to renew that qualification every three years. If you do not have a valid certificate or need to renew your existing one, this day is appropriate for your needs

Part of the day’s work will be to integrate the essential aspects of First Aid within the role of Yoga teaching so it becomes ‘real’. Focus will be on dealing with an emergency situation in a safe and effective way, and will include short lectures, CPR on manikins, placing a person in recovery position, bandaging, putting on slings and care in secondary illness. Questions and answers will be an integral part of the day.

A comprehensive booklet and first aid kit are provided.

In addition to exploring the theoretical background to yoga poses and links between postures, this day will allow you to experience new poses and know which other poses can usefully be used as warm-ups and alternatives.

As part of the day attendees will:
• perform peak poses to the best of their ability
• widen their practice/teaching content
• work out restrictions that prevent them being able to perform poses

tutor photo Richard Adamo has been practising yoga for 24 years and teaching for most of those - mainly a mix of ashtanga and Iyengar styles. During this time he has been attracted to using asana and pranayama practice as a method of stilling the mind as well as for its physical benefits. To do this, the practice must be sufficiently strong to hold the attention without losing focus, and a flowing style of asana practice works well to this end, rests being provided by change and counterpose rather than by static relaxation. This will be the type of practice that we will be doing during the sessions.

Morning Session: 10.00am - 12.00 noon
Jivamukti Yoga is a method of yoga that emphasises the goal of yoga at the heart of its teachings with a spiritual theme incorporating vigorous vinyasa sequencing, Sanskrit chanting, meditation, scripture, hands on adjustment and inspirational music. The morning session will develop our understanding and relationship to the earth using standing poses. Students will have the opportunity to experience a Jivamukti session according to their own ability with modification and variations appropriately used.

Lunch & AGM: 12.00 noon - 2.00pm

Afternoon Session: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Restorative Yoga develops our inner relationship to how we feel at any given moment. Using asana that is propped, the nervous system is given a chance to restore itself and aid a feeling of calm in the mind. For the work to be received, props must be used intelligently. Students will have the opportunity to experience some pranayama as well as meditation.

tutor photo Andrea Kwiatkowski trained as a professional dancer and worked extensively around the world where her interest in yoga and eastern philosophy began. She is a DCT for the BWY, and a certified Jivamukti yoga teacher, having completed her certification in New York in 2005 with Sharon Gannon and David Life. She is certified to teach Yin yoga after studying with Sarah Powers since 2003, and is a Restorative yoga teacher under the guidance of Judith Hanson Lasater. She is also 800hrs-certified for Yoga Alliance.

Andrea has studied and taught in India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Spain, Egypt, France, Turkey and Australia. She teaches in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, where she lives, at the Jasmine Trust BWY-approved centre, and also at the Jivamukti centre in London. She leads BWY events, retreats and workshops around the country and taught at the annual Congress last year. She has set up Santoshayoga, a Yoga centre which gives a percentage of all profits to animal welfare and charities both here and abroad, including Azahar - a foundation for teaching yoga to children in the Third World.

Andrea believes that yoga can enable us to become self-aware and fill our lives with compassion and love. She has years of knowledge of how the body works and uses this experience in teaching asana in her classes and courses.

This will be a day of practice and discussion about how yoga can help people nowadays. Nearly everyone nowadays is extremely busy, often to the point of exhaustion. We shall explore the possibility of giving our students short practices, involving body, breath and mind, to make it easier for them to practise at home.

We shall also look at the ideas of karma yoga presented in the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, to see whether they could help make our lives, and those of our students, more meaningful and rewarding.

• The day will explore the concept of expansive and contractive qualities inherent within breath and asana to allow access to stimulating and quietening practices.
• The practice of asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation (concentration) and simple sounds will aim to reduce rajas (excitement - activity) and tamas (dullness - heaviness) whilst cultivating a quality of sattva (lightness - clarity) in the mind.
• This will result in you feeling light in physical energy and clarity at a mental level.

tutor photo Caroline Arthur began her career in 1994 as a school teacher and she has been studying and practising yoga since the mid 1990s. She was introduced to the teachings of T K Krishnamacharya by Sheila Baker (aYs) and has studied with Ranju Roy and Dave Charlton as part of the Sadhana Mala Teacher and Therapy Practitioner Training Programme. Her approach to yoga is sensitive and varied respecting each individual's uniqueness. 'Yoga has two parts: inner actions and outer actions. Our outer actions are controlled by our inner actions, yet few care or know about the inner actions.' Hari Rama Das

This will be a practical morning working with, and exploring - through yoga - our inner actions and the way they can affect our everyday life. A constant process of learning about yourself. Some yoga experience is necessary.

Beryl began practising yoga many years ago with Wilfred Clarke in Derbyshire. Since then she has worked with some of the great teachers, including TKV Desikachar. Alongside teaching her own classes for over 40 years, Beryl has trained many teachers, having run countless BWY Diploma courses in the Midlands.

It is almost inevitable in any yoga class that there will be someone with a back problem. In this workshop, we will explore movements and postures that can help to strengthen the muscles which support the spine. They may, if practised regularly, help to overcome back pain.

tutor photo Inspiring national and international teacher Rosemary Bennett is a BWY Diploma Course Tutor and has been practising and teaching yoga for over 30 years. She has held many volunteer posts for the BWY such as Education Vice Chair, Special Developments Officer and County Representative. She has been influenced by many teachers and styles of yoga over the years and encourages a combination of strength and flexibility, alignment and dynamism; as a spiritual seeker, you will find this at the heart of her teaching. Rosemary runs a complementary therapy business, which offers reflexology and The Bowen Technique.

Feldenkrais is a unique method that is conscious of working with mind brain and body in each moment. It increases through movement our repertoire and ability of expression across all three aforementioned areas and as such is quite evolutionary. Almost as you read this the obvious is slightly elusive because you need to be in several places at once to appreciate completely what is being said. However in practice none verbally this is a natural occurrence and quite a pleasurable experience. We will work with Awareness through Movement (ATM), a class format like a yoga session and Functional Integration (FI) which is one on one work. It is intended to have plenty of time to work and discuss as we go along. The workshop is pitched to be fun yet informative.

Adam Ward began yoga practice 20 years ago and his teaching refers much to the eight limbs. Having studied the profound and philosophic with some passion, he began the study of Feldenkrais eight years ago - working with those recognised as the most accomplished tutors in the world today. Qualified through the Mia Segal School as a practitioner in Feldenkrais, Adam is a Pioneer Teacher for Ruthy Alon in Bones For Life and is both UK Co-ordinator and Franchise Holder for BFL.

The study of Feldenkrais significantly deepened his understanding of Yoga and one practice helps the other perpetually. 'The practice of Feldenkrais to me is a pleasure and thrills me just as asana freshens and satisfies similarly to the first time I practised'.

Sometimes we need to walk the walk, and Astanga is a lot about doing just that: walk up to your mat and get on and do your practice. The emphasis is on doing it. The aim is to distinguish between doing a pose and developing a sense of being (or presence) in a pose and in every breath, no matter what physical exertion or contortion that the body is enduring. We will move through Sun Salutations A and B and the Standing Series quite promptly. Then we will work through the whole seated series (to the best of our abilities), with more adept practitioners adding full vinyasa in between. We need to complete with the Closing Sequence and a final Savasana.

We will break for lunch after completing the exerting physical aspects of the day. After lunch we will develop the 7 other limbs of the practice and concentrate on Astanga as a spiritual practice.

This is new for 2011 and is suitable for both BWY teachers and student teachers who would like to understand the body, and sequence their classes to include the poses.

Why asana is important? How can we deconstruct the challenging poses from our course and use them to deepen our own experience of the body and practice? There will be a practical session on Unit 3/4 asana with breakdown on back bending, forward bending, strength work and inversions. Following morning work, there will be a Q & A session and session techniques for chakrasana, sirsasana, ustrasana, surya namaskar.

tutor photo Andrea Kwiatkowski trained as a professional dancer and worked extensively around the world where her interest in yoga and eastern philosophy began.
