Focus of the month – Aparigraha
(non-attachment, non-greed)

Focus of the month

APARIGRAHA STHAIRYE JANMAKATHANTA SAMBODHAH

When we are established in non-attachment, the nature and purpose of existence is understood. [Bhagavad Gita 6:16-18]

Aparigraha is abstention from greed or hoarding. In this sutra we can observe our ‘wants’ and ‘needs’, and ask if they are driven by our desires or to help us have a comfortable existence. What do you need to be able to live a comfortable life? A new car, a large house, clothes, and jewellery – what would make your life comfortable? All these possessions can become obsessions. This sutra says when we can practice non-attachment then we will be able to observe our true nature.

Stephen Sturgess writes “People who act from attachment manipulate situations and other people because they fear that they will lose the desired object. Such people have no security in life because they are ruled by selfish desires, anger, greed and fear. Security is the love in your heart. Your generosity and capacity to give is your security. Give unconditionally, because when you give with conditions, they will return to you”.

When I read this sutra I always feel inspired to spring clean, be it physically around my house or mentally whilst in meditation.

Another way to observe this sutra is to make a donation of your time or help to someone and remember: “It is always better to give than to receive”.
