There is a lot of confusion in terms of what is Ashtanga Yoga. Some people say it is the Indian version of Bikram Yoga, while others say it is basically an exercise technique that has now been stretched into several styles of Yoga. The actual term Ashtanga Yoga actually derives from two words: “Asht” means sun and “Bhag” means bow. This latter word came about as a result of what Ashtanga Yoga initially became known for – using Bhagrut as a means to meditate. A lot of people feel that Yoga is mainly done as an exercise, but it also has a lot of spiritual value as well.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, also known as Hatha Yoga, is basically a discipline of deep breathing, as exercise. Ashtanga Yoga was first introduced by K.P.V. Gautama in the 1920s. He claimed that he had learnt the system from a teacher, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who was a practitioner of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The original Ashtanga Yoga taught students how to breathe deeply and move the body gradually through different poses, known as Asanas.
Now there are a few versions of Ashtanga Yoga, one being Ashtanga Surya Yoga and another being Ashtanga Nritya Yoga. The former is essentially the same as Bikram Yoga, while the latter incorporates the best aspects of vinyasa and sun salutations in asanas and is more advanced. It’s different because in Ashtanga Yoga, we are encouraged to move our bodies more completely than in Bikram, as our positions need not be fixed. But this doesn’t mean that Ashtanga is somehow inferior. Ashtanga allows us to stretch out our muscles and joints.
In ashtanga, you have to pay attention to your breathing, which is essential in any type of exercise. Most of us aren’t very flexible at all and need to rely on the power of our arms and legs when doing everyday activities, including walking, jogging and cycling. Ashtanga is different because you are taught to control your breathing and not rely solely on your muscles. The result is that you increase flexibility and your stamina. It is the basis of what is known as sarvangasana, which is usually done in the morning before starting your day and involves a series of yoga postures, or a full sitting down of the body and a controlled but still, calm breathing.
You may be wondering what Ashtanga Yoga has to do with the eight limbs theory. Well, in yoga theory there are eight limbs that make up the human body, but when it comes to the practice itself, you are focusing on connecting your mind, soul, spirit and body through your postures. When you are breathing and concentrating on each of these aspects, you are really concentrating on the inner you, which is the you that is present in the moment. As you focus on this, you will notice that you feel lighter, more energized and happier. These feelings and emotions are what we call prana.
You can see that there are many advantages to daily practice yoga. Ashtanga yoga is fast, fun and flexible and will help you get fit. Ashtanga yoga is not just going to help you lose weight, although it will definitely help you lose fat. Ashtanga yoga is going to help you strengthen and tone all of your muscles, including those muscles you use when you perform other types of physical activity. Ashtanga yoga is not just going to help you get healthy, but it’s also going to help you keep healthy.
